SacDOT's Safe Street Lighting and Intersection Safety Lighting Programs have an annual budget of about $3.4 million. Most revenue comes from the service charge you pay with your annual property tax, supplemented by the County.

Fully half of all costs for the program are for electricity. SacDOT is a paying commercial customer of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). It is SMUD’s policy to partially subsidize residential rates through higher commercial rates. Thus, the amount that SacDOT pays for electricity has increased by 26% since 1994, while residential electricity rates have only increased by 9%. A further 7% SMUD commercial rate increase is scheduled for 2008.
